Update: we are no longer accepting applications for our curation fellowship. Thank you for your interest! Please follow the Medium LinkedIn jobs page for future opportunities.

Our mission at Medium is to help people deepen their understanding of the world and discover ideas that matter. We are building a place where ideas are judged on the value they provide to readers, not the fleeting attention they can attract for advertisers. We are creating the best place for reading and writing on the internet.

We are offering a new paid 3-month fellowship, starting June 1, 2024, for a cohort of people interested in gaining skills and experience doing story curation: evaluating writing based on Medium’s Quality Standards. We are particularly looking for participants with specialist knowledge in the following topics:

  • US Elections and Politics: Understands issues, with relevant experience, related to the 2024 election
  • World Politics: Applied understanding and experience with geopolitical issues and disputes, especially current wars and conflicts.
  • Programming/Tech Specialist: Understands technical content related to software developers and programmers. Areas of particular need include Python, Golang, Data Science, Javascript, DevOps, and AWS.

This is a paid fellowship with paid training time. It pays $20/hour for 10–20 hours per week.

What you’ll learn

We’ll train you on our internal processes for content curation where you’ll gain cutting-edge transferable skills. You’ll gain experience with:

  • Evaluating the written word
  • Working with content distribution that combines human and algorithmic recommendations and understanding the strengths of both
  • The challenges of AI-generated content on massive content platforms
  • How we work with Trust and Safety to create a safe and respectful environment for diverse voices

What you’ll do as a Medium curation fellowship participant

You’ll receive paid training on how to review Medium stories against our Quality Guidelines. You’ll learn how to evaluate writing on the merits of what it conveys to the reader — not on the basis of its potential virality or popularity.

You’ll learn how to spot potential violations of Medium rules and learn how our Trust and Saftey team evaluates complex situations.

You’ll have an unprecedented opportunity to understand the power and the limitations of algorithmic content feeds — and how we use human curation to overcome those limitations.

Requirements

  1. United States resident and legally permitted to work in the US. Flexible hours, but you must be available between Noon and 2pm Eastern Time on weekdays for occasional zoom meetings. This is a fully remote position.
  2. Understanding of English grammar and style. Applied subject matter expertise is a must. Editorial experience is a plus.
  3. Ability to read and evaluate articles quickly per our established quality standards, on both specialist and general topics
  4. Ability to run Google Authenticator on your own phone
  5. Familiarity with Google Spreadsheets
